Open Volunteer Positions
Its summer time and here at Boxcar we're working on making the our outdoor space a comfortable, welcoming place for reading, community group gatherings, and outdoor events. Every Monday this summer starting July 12th we'll be planting, trimming, and greening the space around us from 4pm-7pm. Feel free to stop by and lend a hand--and don't worry if you can't tell the difference between an unblossomed tulip and a weed. Abby Mack, our Gardening Coordinator, will be there to offer direction and help lead the project.
Check out Abby and Michael Ismerio's totally sweet plan for the space and then stop by to help as you can by donating your time or materials! Email us at boxcar@boxcarbooks.org with any questions or plant donations.
Day One/Two: Front Yard and Alley
- Remove tree saplings- maple, mimosa (except the one on the far right corner which we can stake up to encourage its growth), ilantus
- Re-direct morning glory- remove the vine from plants and bushes and direct it onto the fence.
- Clear dead branches and trash.
- Remove poison ivy (only a little) and weeds (we have a lot of interesting plants growing but some of them are crowding others, so we can remove some of them).
- Compost and mulch/woodchip- a lot of our plants are getting weak because the soil is so poor, but we can rehabilitate it pretty easily
- Remove Vinca, Euanymous, and Virginia Creeper from staircase and replace with Trumpet Creeper (beloved by humming birds)
- Remove weeds (spiny lettuce, curly dock, sow thistle) to make room for awesome day flowers growing there.
- Remove Black Locust growing too close to the foundation.
- Remove everything except big trees (locusts and mulberry) and grapevine (The majority of the back yard are weeds which grow from troubled soil. If we can remove the weeds, we can rehabilitate the soil and grow cool things next summer).
- Till ground, water and place overlapping cardboard over the ground.
- Begin piling compost (dead leaves, grass, etc).
